rick. i'm jenna lee. we're half an hour away where suspected mass murderer james holmes will hear the formal charges which the rampage killed 12 and lefts to's it of dozen dozen of others injured. holmes had the dyed reddish orange hair. he seemed dazed. this time around we'll not get a look at him because the judge banned cameras inside the courtroom. the judge issuing a gag order in the case. defense attorneys say it has been repeatedly violated pointing to recent leaks to the media and they will likely bring that up as an issue in today's hearing. alicia acuna is live in colorado with more. alicia? >> reporter: jenna, there are a few things on tap for today in addition to the filing of charges. james holmes will be in courtroom number 201 for the filing of charges in the expectation is that at minimum there will be 12 first-degree murder charges. there are two crime scenes that we know of. the theater where the shooting took place and. this is up to the direct attorney. >> carol chambers is an aggressive no-nonsense prosecutor. she debated the death penalty in her own mind. she
the several block radius in this neighborhood, i talked to several people that did not know this james holmes, but i did talk to a former bouncer just about half an hour ago who lives in this neighborhood and he recognizes james holmes and the former bouncer was, you know, working at this bar around the corner, pretty popular for the folks who live here, and he describes james holmes as a laid-back guy that would go to the bar every now and then on sunday nights for karaoke night, and that he mainly kept to himself and that he would show up to the bar by himself and that he was really never seen with anybody. so at this point, we are watching the scene unfold and then there's no doubt, with the neighbors here that are caught up in this chaotic situation, there's no doubt this incident is going to be, you know, burned on the consciousness of colorado for many years, given this incident. it's astonishing watching this unfold. >> you know the area and you know what happened overnight. this was the multiplex in suburban denver. we know it's very close to an air force base and that there were some
, we heard from the aurora police chief and he described how his officers identified james holmes as the suspect and not a s.w.a.t. officer despite all of his ballistic gear. >> there was one particular piece of equipment that he had on him that was out of place. i am so proud of my officers that they spotted that right away and chal llenged him. in that chaos, it is quite reasonable that an officer might have confused him for a s.w.a.t. officer or a heavily armed officer responding to the scene. so kudos to my two cops who grabbed this guy and that sharp observation that they made immediately that led them to suspect him as being a suspect. >> there is more we are learning about the 24-year-old suspected of mass murder. he will appear in court tomorrow morning for the first time and the sheriff says holmes is isolated from other inmates. reports suggest he is now also refusing to talk with police. >>> as for his boobytraped apartment, the fbi detonated explosives they collected there in a remote, desert area. they will analyze the remnants at fbi headquarters. officials say the t

in the university of colorado mail room that appears to have been mailed by the suspected shooter, james holmes. cnn's ed lavandera is in aurora for us. ed, what do we know about this package? >> reporter: well, we're still trying to gather information on what exactly is inside that package, wolf. but as you mentioned that law enforcement official telling cnn that on monday police and fbi discovered a package that was apparent apparently sent by james holmes, the 24-year-old suspected gunman. now it's unclear obviously if this package was indeed sent by him, it was clearly sent before he was taken into custody. it arrived at some point on monday at the university mail room. we've also been told by hospital officials over the last couple of days this is something we've been monitoring for some time that there were two packages that were suspicious and were being looked into, one found in the mail room and also one that was actually delivered to a university professor. so we've been trying to nail down more information on this. and we'll continue to do so, wolf. >> what's the university of colorado sa
